Select Student Support Services (4S)
The University of Michigan-Dearborn Select Student Support Services (4S) Program is a state funded Labor and Economic Opportunity program (LEO). It was created as part of the larger King Chavez Parks (KCP) Initiative. The 4-S Program is designed to develop retention programs that benefit academically or economically disadvantaged students enrolled at 4 year public and independent educational institutions throughout Michigan.
The 4S program aims to increase graduation rates. Our 4S program provides students who are low income, first generation, a student with a disability, and/or exhibit academic need with the following services:
-
academic tutoring
-
guidance in selecting postsecondary academic courses
-
information for students regarding public and private scholarships and financial aid programs
-
assistance with completing financial aid applications
-
counseling services to improve students’ financial and economic literacy
-
assistance with students’ applications to graduate and professional programs (for four-year grantees)
-
assistance with students’ applications to, and obtaining financial assistance from, four-year programs (for two-year grantees)
In addition to the above services, the 4S program at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will provide participants with personalized counseling services, expose students to cultural events, provide an academic or mentoring program and provide resources to secure temporary housing for students who need a place to live (e.g. homeless youth and youth who have aged-out of the foster care system).
