PEC Program for Secondary Teachers

The College of Education, Health, and Human Services offers the PEC program for teachers who are seeking to renew a standard or professional certificate or to advance to the professional certificate.

Standard Teaching Certificate

The Standard Teaching Certificate is a five-year teaching certificate with unlimited renewals. Each renewal adds five years to the certificate’s validity. A renewal can be requested any time after January 1 of the expiration year.

Professional Teaching Certificate

The Professional Teaching Certificate is a five-year teaching certificate with unlimited renewal. Each renewal adds five years to the certificate’s validity. A renewal can be requested any time after January 1 of the expiration year.

Progressing to the Professional Certificate

Application for progression to the Professional Certificate may occur after three (3) years of successful teaching since the issue date of the initial Standard Teaching Certificate, within the content areas and grade level of the Standard Teaching Certificate; and other requirements as detailed in the Michigan Department of Education Progressing to Professional Certificate - Beginning July 1, 2018. 

Program Completion Requirements

Grade Point Average

  1. Renewal of a standard or professional certificate, or advancing to the professional certificate (courses at the 400 level or above) requires that a student maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  2. An additional endorsement requires that a student successfully complete all requirements as stated on the plan of study with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Passing scores on the appropriate MTTC subject area test(s) are required before the university will recommend addition of desired endorsement(s). Test results must be reported by electronic delivery or direct mail from Pearson Evaluation Systems to the University of Michigan-Dearborn College of Education, Health, and Human Services. No hand carried or emailed scores will be accepted.

Time to Completion

Program completion time will vary depending on transfer credit and whether a student is enrolling on a full-time or part-time basis.

Note: SENATE BILL 327 - Effective July 1, 2009, satisfactory completion of a three-credit course of study with appropriate field experiences in the diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities and differentiated instruction (EDC 560) is required for ALL teachers holding a standard teaching certificate upgrading to the professional education certificate.
