Fairlane Center South, corridor renovation
The study areas on either side of the open stairwell in FCS have been recently renovated. A dimension wall material has been applied to the back walls echoing the industrial vibe of the Diego Rivera murals.
New booth seating was added and existing furniture was reconfigured to create multiple study settings. New electrical and USB ports were installed at each table in the booth seating area to expand the locations for students to use multiple types of devices.
Institute for Advanced Vehicle Systems Motion-Base Simulator

IAVS Room 1080 was renovated to accommodate a new Cruden motion-base driving simulator, which will enhance teaching and research capabilities.
Engineering Laboratory Building Remodel
The University of Michigan-Dearborn replaced its nearly 60-year-old Engineering Laboratory Building with a new $90 million facility, which opened on March 1, 2021. The project was approved in September 2016 by the university's Board of Regents and was designed by SmithGroup, with Granger Construction serving as Construction Manager. Groundbreaking took place in late April 2018. The $90 million project was supported by a $30 million capital outlay from the state of Michigan, bond financing, and individual, corporate and university support.
The original ELB, built in 1959, was one of four original buildings on the UM-Dearborn campus. The new facility covers about 123,000 square feet and serves as the campus' primary engineering teaching and research facility.
The new ELB building includes 40+ teaching and research labs designed to facilitate entrepreneurial problem solving, encourage multidisciplinary collaboration in the context of 21st-century engineering instruction and provide students with new collaboration and project spaces.
A large, light-filled atrium connects the building to the campus from both sides, and provides a gathering space for presentations or industry trade shows. Over 20 informal learning spaces throughout the building provide areas for student collaboration and relaxation. The building houses faculty offices and is the new home of the Office of Student Advising and Success.
In late 2021, the ELB formally achieved LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council, the first project at UM Dearborn to achieve this honor. LEED, short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, recognizes the project's adherence to sustainable and environmentally-sound design, construction, and maintenance practices.
