Compensation & Classification

Staff classifications are an important component of the Human Resources services. Staff positions are reviewed and classified utilizing the university wide Career Path Navigator which was implemented in 2005. The navigator allows for classification matches on market based titles, as well as leveling within titles for most positions. The classification system may be used by staff for career planning purposes, leaders for job development purposes, or external candidates for purposes of reviewing potential positions and careers within the university system. The navigator sorts positions based on Career Families, Career Bands and Job Roles.

Classification Evaluations

Staff positions may from time to time be evaluated for an appropriate match with classifications in the navigator.  Appropriate steps for a review include:

1. The unit leader discusses the position with the HR Consultant. The HR Consultant will meet with the incumbent or supervisor to review the description, duties, and responsibilities of the position. The HR Consultant will take into consideration changes in the job description and similar positions across campus and the university as a whole.

2. In partnership with the employee and the supervisor, the HR Consultant updates the current job description to include any changes, additions, or elimination of duties utilizing the Position Description form.

3. A determination will be made if there is a necessary classification change for the position or incumbent along with the position supervisor.
