UM-Dearborn is grateful for your service. And, as a gold-level veteran-friendly school, we’re honored to welcome you to campus. As a veteran, active-duty service member, or dependent of either, you may qualify for VA education benefits, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program.
Whether you’re a first-time student, transferring from another school or interested in a graduate degree, these benefits – along with other UM-Dearborn resources and support – will help you achieve your academic goals.

Veteran Admissions Checklist
Military-affiliated students applying to UM-Dearborn will follow the regular admissions process for their student type and program of interest. Here, we’ll outline a few additional steps related to VA education benefits.
Apply for VA Education Benefits
Complete the Application for VA Education Benefits through the Veterans Administration website. When your application is complete, the VA will issue you a Certificate of Eligibility which includes an overview of your benefits.

Request Military Transcripts
Order your Joint Service Transcripts (JST) or Community College of the Air Force Transcripts (CCAF). Credit for military service varies; the typical award is 2-6 units based on the recommendations from the American Council on Education Association.
UM-Dearborn also accepts credits for CLEP, DSST and military education programs.
Complete VA Certification
After you enroll and register for classes, you must complete the Veterans Affairs Certification Request Form. Moving forward, you will complete this form prior to each semester you’re at UM-Dearborn.
Veteran Student Support
Veterans at UM-Dearborn receive mentorship from a dedicated support team of people who’ve served just like you. Beyond helping you navigate your VA education benefits, we host a range of social and professional development events each year. Our campus is home to several veteran student organizations, too.
Serving Vets in Need: Classroom Project Addresses Real-World Problems
For a class assignment, MBA student Michael Matteis developed a prototype mental health app called AI Veteran Companion. Matteis, a U.S. Air Force veteran, wanted to help others like him navigate the transition from military life to civilian life.
