Admission Criteria for Transfer Students

Transfer admission to UM-Dearborn is based on grades and credits earned from prior coursework as determined on transcripts from all previously attended institutions. UM-Dearborn’s four academic colleges have their own admission criteria, as listed in the following grid:

Transferable Credits 

At UM-Dearborn, we value the hard work put into the credits earned at your current college. We’ve developed the Course Transfer System, a tool to help you determine how much of your existing coursework will transfer to our campus. 

There is no limit to the number of credits you can transfer to UM-Dearborn, however, students must meet all graduation requirements and complete their last 30 consecutive credit hours here to earn a degree (Any extenuating circumstances to this consecutive credit policy will be handled on an individual basis by the academic college).

Transfer credit will only be awarded for courses completed with a grade of “C” (2.0) or better. Transfer credit can only be awarded from an official transcript from the institutions that originally awarded the credit. Credit can not be taken from another institution's transcript.

Transfer students are encouraged to apply early in their final semester prior to enrollment at UM-Dearborn and in advance of the deadlines above. To apply, the following information is required:

• Submitted online application — it's free and easy!
• Official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended
  • Transcripts must have a posted print date within one year of the date you submit your application.
  • We can begin reviewing your application with unofficial transcripts, but you’ll need to submit official transcripts from all institutions before your first semester begins. Without official transcripts, you may be unable to register for classes or receive financial aid (in subsequent semesters).
  • To speed up processing, we strongly recommend having your transcripts sent electronically. These are typically delivered faster and help us make a quicker admission decision. Transcripts can also be mailed directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • At UM-Dearborn, a transcript is considered official if it is sent directly from the issuing institution—either electronically or by mail. Transcripts forwarded by the student (such as via email) may be used for preliminary review but are not official.
  • Failure to disclose all schools you have attended may result in revocation of admission.
• If you have completed fewer than 24 credit hours, you must also submit:
  • Final, official high school transcript(s) or GED Score
  • SAT and/or ACT test score(s) (optional)
• English language proficiency for non-native speakers

Commonly Requested Items For Completing Your Application

• College Transcript – An official transcript sent directly by the issuing institution
• Conduct Documentation – A detailed statement of explanation for each incident with supporting documentation. Visit Conduct Review for more information.
• Copy of Social Security Card – You did not provide your social security number on your application. This is not required for admission, but may delay financial aid processing.
• High School Transcript – An official transcript sent directly to UM-Dearborn by the school for transfer students with less than 24 transferrable credits
• SAT/ACT Scores – Sent directly to UM-Dearborn by the testing agency or posted on your high school transcript for transfer students with less than 24 transferrable credits
