Video Recording

Video-related services at UM-Dearborn vary by college.  Please see the information below for details.  If you have any questions not covered here, please contact the Office of Digital Education.

Campus-wide tools and services

Digital Education Video Recording service

The Office of Digital Education now has a recording room in the CASL Building. The recording room and related services are available to faculty and staff from all campus units. Please see the Digital Education Recording Room page for details and more information.

Self-Service Screen and Webcam Recording and Editing

All faculty and students at UM-Dearborn have access to Kaltura Capture, a Presentation/Screen/Webcam recording tool provided through the Kaltura integration with Canvas.  Please see the MiVideo information page for additional details.  Once recordings are created and uploaded, the Kaltura online editor allows the video owner to make simple edits to the video, like removing unneeded parts form the beginning or end of a recording, or even taking out mistakes in the middle of a recording.

Some individual departments may provide their faculty a license for Camtasia, a more advanced recording and editing tool.  Please check with your department about availability or purchase options if Kaltura Capture does not meet your needs.  As Camtasia is not an official campus tool, training and assistance will not be generally available.

For very advanced editing, U-M now provides access to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, including the Adobe Premier Pro video editor, or all faculty, staff and students at all three campuses.  Premier is a very powerful editing tool that is even used for many Hollywood-produced movies.  All of the extra abilities/features available in Adobe Premier do mean that it is a much more complex and difficult to navigate tool, even for intermediate users.  Unfortunately, UM-Dearborn is unable to provide any direct training/workshops around Adobe Premier Pro at this time, though there are many resources available on YouTube, LinkedIn Learning, and other sites across the internet.

College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters

CASL faculty who need assistance with video recording for a class may contact Greg Taylor.  Greg has some recording equipment faculty may be able to utilize, and may provide some editing services for videos recorded with this equipment.  Turnaround time will vary, so please contact Greg in advance to establish a schedule for recordings.

College of Engineering and Computer Science

CECS faculty teaching an online course will have their companion campus course scheduled in a classroom equipped for lecture capture utilizing MediaSite by Sonic Foundry. Lectures will be posted in Canvas for online students by CECS Distance Learning Network staff. For additional information about CECS lecture capture or MediaSite, please see the Canvas - MediaSite Help & Support page.
