Device & Technology Recommendations for Students

Students are encouraged to have access to the following recommended technologies in order to be successful with the different class modalities and academic requirements at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  This list is not inclusive of all the different technologies you might need for your classes, but it provides a baseline of tools that will support your progress to degree completion.

While many tasks at UM-Dearborn can be done on mobile devices, we highly recommend using a desktop/laptop computer as the primary device for most tasks.  The primary device should meet the following specifications:

• The device must use a Windows version currently supported by Microsoft or the MacOS version currently supported by Apple (as of Winter 2026, those would be Windows 11 and macOS 26).  Keeping your OS up to date will help ensure your device remains compatible with the different technologies you need to use as a student.
  • Devices running ChromeOS, AndroidOS, iPadOS, or iOS are not recommended as a primary device
• The device needs to be able to run the current or previous version of one of the 4 major web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari).

• A tablet or mobile device may be suitable for some tasks when a primary device is unavailable.  A tablet or mobile device must run the current or previous version of ChromeOS, Android, iPadOS or iOS to be able to access the most frequently used UM-Dearborn apps, like Canvas.

• Some courses may require a camera for presentations, exams, small group work and other class activities.  The built in camera, microphone, and speakers on most devices are likely sufficient, though a high quality headset/microphone may provide a better experience. 
• A microphone and speaker(s) may also be necessary to listen to presentations, participate in class sessions, or create multimedia based assignments.
• Some courses may require scans or photos of paper to be submitted for certain assignments.  A scanner, mobile device, or digital camera will be required for these courses.

• A robust internet connection with strong upload and download speeds is critical particularly when taking online classes that require attendance via video conferencing tools.  In order to fully participate in these types of class activities we recommend the following internet speed specifications.
  • Download: 100mbps
  • Upload 20mbps
• Faster speeds may be required for certain courses or where internet connection is shared among multiple devices/people in a household.

Educational discounts on technology items are available through the University of Michigan Tech Shop, which also provides access to several software applications that students can use for free or at a significantly reduced cost. When ordering online through the Tech Shop, students may use Student Account Billing (SAB) as a payment option, which means financial aid may potentially be applied toward necessary technology purchases.
