Homeschooled Students

The University of Michigan-Dearborn is a homeschooler-friendly university.

We welcome students who have received personal educational attention while studying at home, and we invite them to apply and enroll at UM-Dearborn. Our small classroom environment ensures that students receive personal attention.

Over the years, UM-Dearborn has enrolled many homeschooled students who have been successful at completing their University of Michigan degree.

Admission Requirements

Homeschooled students are considered for admission using the same criteria as other incoming freshmen:

  • Apply for admission
  • High School Transcript (sample template)
  • SAT or ACT Score Test Optional
  • No letters of recommendation or essays are required
  • Non-Native Speakers may have additional requirements
  • Please note: All applicants must graduate from an approved and/or accredited secondary school or home school, or present a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Students with at least a 600 GED score (Battery Average Score) will be considered for prospective degree admission. Students who take college coursework while in high school (i.e. dual enrollment) are considered first-year students.

Admission Criteria

SAT or ACT Score Test Optional.

Often, homeschooled students have taken college courses which are used to earn a high school diploma.  College credits will be included on the student's Degree Works account which will indicate how these courses transfer to UM-Dearborn.

Homeschooled students, like other students, are required to submit proof of graduation (diploma or passing GED scores) prior to enrollment at UM-Dearborn.

Recommended Curriculum

Homeschooled students are encouraged to complete a similar sequence of courses as the State of Michigan's Merit Curriculum. This ensures that homeschooled students are appropriately prepared for the coursework and faculty expectations at UM-Dearborn.

Test Scores (Optional)

  • SAT or ACT Score Test Optional
  • You will have the option to indicate on the admissions application if you want your test scores factored into your admission decision.
