CourseLeaf CIM (Curriculum Inventory Management) is the new software used for all curriculum related matters at UM-Dearborn. CIM contains a workflow component and is used for the following curriculum actions:

  • Creating a new course
  • Modifying an existing course
  • Deactivating a course
  • Creating a new program
  • Modifying an existing program
  • Deactivating a program
  • Modifying a program CIP code

Logging Into CIM

If you are denied access when attempting to login using the links below, it is likely because you have not gone through formal training and have not been added to the system. If you need access, please contact McKenna Maurino (maurino@umich.edu).

NOTE: The course/program proposal forms do not save automatically. You must save them to prevent losing information (and can continue working or return to them later). If you lose internet access (computer shutting down/going to sleep/shutting a laptop), you will lose any unsaved work and will receive a general error message when attempting to save later.

Tips/FAQs

What are the "?" icons?

The small blue “?” icons will display help text when clicked on.

How do I view the workflow?

Once a proposal is submitted through the CIM system, the workflow steps that item will take will be outlined on the upper right side of the submission. Only Approver roles will show up in the workflow - not FYI roles (such as committees).

What are Contact Hours?

Contact hours are the amount of hours that the professor will hold class with students. This field is required and needs to be populated with a number (not N/A).

How do I access a previously saved proposal that I have not submitted yet?

To access a previously saved, but not submitted, proposal please follow the below steps:

  • Go to the CourseLeaf CIM course OR program landing page: Link TBD (course) Link TBD (program)
  • Enter your uniqname and password (if you are not already logged in)
  • In the text field box to the left of the green "search" box enter the title of the course or program by adding an asterisk (*) before and after word(s) and click “Search” (example: for the program "Data Science" you could search *Data* or you could search *Science* or you could search *Data Science*)
  • Click on a search result to reveal the information for that program
  • Select the green “Edit Course” button to the right to begin editing
  • If you'd like to save a proposal and finish it at a later time, click “Save Changes”
  • If you'd like to submit a proposal and begin workflow for that proposal, click “Save & Submit”
If a course is cross-listed, do I have to make the edits in all cross-listed courses? What about equivalents?

No. Cross-listed courses share the same course form, so once the change is made, it applies to all courses. The Department Chair of the cross-listed course will receive an email notifying them of the change.

Equivalent courses, including those at different levels (e.g. SOC 300 & SOC 500), will need to have changes made in both course forms.

I want to use the Propose New from Existing feature to base my new course off of an existing course that is currently edited and in workflow. Do I have to wait until the course is fully approved?

You can use the Propose New from Existing feature for your new course when the existing course is at any point in editing or workflow.

There are changes in my department or committee that need to be reflected in CIM. What do I do?

Please email all changes to McKenna Maurino (maurino@umich.edu).

Can I use CIM to submit a DDC application, or apply when I am creating a course?

No, please continue to use the PDF forms found on the DDC Application page to submit a course for consideration.

When I use the Export to PDF function, it only saves in black and white. How do I save the proposal with the color changes that are reflected in the software?

The software has an option in the left hand corner to Export to PDF, but unfortunately only exports in black in white. If you right click on the page (or double-finger click for Mac users) and Print to a PDF, this will allow you to save it as a document with color.

I am a Committee Member and I don't have a role in the drop down menu on the Approvers Landing Page. What do I do?

Since Committee Members are not listed as 'Approvers' (they only have viewing access) -- there is not a role that populates in the drop down menu, so you will have to choose the Department Chair or Associate Dean role to view the proposal from this page. Otherwise, you should be able to view the proposal when you click on the link that is emailed to you when the proposal reaches your stage in the workflow.

What information do I need to edit/add prerequisites to a course?

To edit a prerequisite, a minimum grade needs to be given (Banner requires it). If you do not include a grade, your proposal will be rolled back to you.

For permission restrictions (e.g. "permission of instructor" or "permission of department") do not need to be added to CIM. Those restrictions should be requested during the schedule drafting process.
