10:50 - 12:10 Introduction to Gathering Data in the Field - Registration
Field work is a key component of many teaching, research, and community engagement activities in almost any domain, from Archaeology to Zoology, and geospatial or location-based information is a cornerstone of such work. Learn about the Esri ArcGIS field apps, including Explorer, Collector, Survey123, and QuickCapture. Used separately or together, these apps aid and improve capturing, understanding, and navigating your data. Also, discover how they seamlessly integrate with the rest of the Esri ArcGIS platform, enabling easy yet powerful analysis, sharing, collaboration, and dissemination workflows.
This workshop includes optional hands-on activities with the field apps during the lunch break; weather permitting, the activities will take place outdoors. For that portion of the workshop, please bring your smartphone, and if possible, pre-install the above apps; they are free downloads from the Apple App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft Store. (Use of the apps relies on U-M login credentials, and we will have temporary credentials available for non-U-M participants.)
1:30 - 2:50 Build Interactive Maps with ArcGIS Online - Registration
ArcGIS Online is a simple, yet powerful interactive mapping tool to which everyone at the University of Michigan has access. Use ArcGIS Online to visualize data, analyze spatial patterns, and present materials in a professional-looking app. In this hands-on workshop, we will learn how to easily turn a spreadsheet into a map using ArcGIS Online, all on the web. We will explore how to work with symbols and pop-ups on the map, and discover and add data from authoritative sources, including Esri’s Living Atlas.
3:05 - 4:25 Getting Started with Story Maps - Registration
Do you have a story to tell? Looking for innovative ways to communicate research? Interested in exploring multimedia assignments? Are location or geographic relationship a key component of your message? Then harness the power of maps to tell your story!
Story Maps provide a powerful, engaging, and inspiring alternative for dissemination of research, public outreach, educational activities, and more! In this hands-on workshop, learn to use Story Maps’ intuitive interface to combine interactive maps, text, images, and multimedia content into a web-based, visually compelling, responsive narrative.
