Field placements allow for each learner to build skills, knowledge, and confidence in his/her own pathway toward becoming a professional educator in real world placements.

The College of Education, Health and Human Services Field Placement Office handles all assignments for pre-student teaching (practicum) and student teaching experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You should have: a) completed 85 hours, b) attended one full term at UM-Dearborn, c) a GPA of 3.0 better or at least a 2.75 in your major, minor and professional sequence and d) completed the professional sequence.

  • If you plan on student teaching in the fall term you must attend the student teaching meeting in September of the year prior to student teaching. If you plan on student teaching in the winter you must attend the student teaching meeting in March of the year prior to student teaching. Look for signs posted or check the CEHHS website.

  • You must have the following on file in the Field Placement Office: TB test, Criminal Background Check, CPR-Adult/Child/Infant and First Aid, Oral Expression Evaluation, Blood Borne Pathogen Training-Video and Test, and MTTC tests. A passing score on the Elementary MTTC test is required for elementary students. A passing score on both the subject area major and minor MTTC tests is required for secondary students.

  • You will not be allowed to student teach until the appropriate test(s) has/have been passed. Passing scores must be on file in the Placement Office.

  • On the CEHHS website you can find the date, time and place of the student teaching meetings, application materials and handbook with the seminar schedule.

  • Student teaching is a full day every day (except selected Wednesday afternoons) for the entire semester.

  • A number of criteria are used when determining assignments. These include: partnership schools, geographical location, practicum assignments, diversity of students, supervisors and¬†availability of placements. Please note that you may not be placed in your district of choice due to the above factors. In some cases, multiple requests are necessary.

  • No. It is the responsible of the Field Placement Office to find your placement.

  • Notification can be done in a few different ways. The school principal may call you, the school district may call you or the Placement Office may call or email you. If you are notified by the school district, always inform the Placement Office.

  • Some districts may require an interview by the cooperating teacher and/or principal prior to assignment. Please treat the interview as a professional job interview.

  • Elementary students will be assigned in a regular classroom, which includes all content areas. Secondary students must be assigned at least five classes, three-five in the major and/or one-two in the minor.

  • The school principal or the school district will make the final decision.

  • No. You must complete all professional sequence courses before you are allowed to student teach.

  • Taking a course while student teaching is highly discouraged. You must petition and be approved to take a class while student teaching. The course must not interfere with your student teaching assignment.

  • You must complete twelve (12) full weeks of student teaching before you can substitute for your cooperating teacher for only two (2) days per week in your assigned classroom. Paperwork for approval is available in the Field Placement Office.
