MTTC Secondary Certification Exams
MTTC subject major and subject minor exams must be passed prior to student teaching for undergraduate, post-degree and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) students obtaining secondary certification.
Registration
Please visit the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification website to obtain information regarding test dates and registration procedures.
Students pursuing endorsements in a foreign language (e.g. Spanish, French, etc...) must also take an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and score at the Advanced Low level. The OPI is a 15-30 minute, live conversation with a tester, to assess your speaking ability.
This can be completed during or after student teaching and graduation, but must be done prior to being recommended to the State of Michigan for your endorsement. We suggest students first focus on passing the MTTC Subject Test and then shift attention to the OPI. Experience in student teaching may help to prepare you for the interview, however, please keep in mind you cannot obtain your endorsement until the Advanced Low level is achieved.
To register for the Oral Proficiency Interview, visit the Language Testing International website and select the language for the endorsement you are pursuing. Registration Instructions can be found here.
