Elementary Number Theory

Explores the deep patterns of integers, including primes, remainders, and modular structure. Students connect number theory to cryptography, error-correcting codes, and integer equations. The course emphasizes insight, problem-solving, and discovering why numbers behave the way they do.

Stochastic Processes

Studies stochastic processes: mathematical models for randomness evolving over time. Topics include Markov chains and Poisson processes, with applications in finance, insurance, data science, and engineering. The course extends probability to analyze how uncertain real-world systems change and develop.

Advanced Calculus 

Explores the rigorous foundations of calculus, including limits, continuity, differentiation, integration, and sequences. Students develop proof skills while studying subtle examples, such as continuous functions that are nowhere differentiable. The course is ideal for deepening mathematical maturity and understanding the “why” behind calculus.

Introduction to Computational Mathematics  

Teaches how to turn mathematical theory into practical computer algorithms for complex problems. Students learn numerical methods for solving equations, managing computational error, and optimizing systems. The course supports applications in AI, engineering, data science, and modeling real-world phenomena.

An Actuarial Mathematics grad who is now working as an actuarial analyst for Ally Financial. Autumn notes that the actuarial mathematics program at UM-Dearborn provided the necessary building blocks toward becoming a credentialed actuary and the support from the department and faculty was crucial to her success.

An Actuarial mathematics graduate who is currently working as an Actuary for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. Blake notes that the UM-Dearborn Actuarial Mathematics program helped him become an associate of the society of actuaries (ASA) in April 2025 with the relevant coursework and additional actuarial exam preparation. 

A Mathematics graduate who earned her secondary teaching certificate and is now a mathematics teacher at Redford Union High School. Katrina is now pursuing a master’s degree in educational and instructional technology and says the mathematics program at UM-Dearborn prepared her for the MTTC teaching skills test and for developing lessons as a teacher. 

Emilee received her bachelor’s in Mathematics with a minor in Applied Statistics along with a Master's in Applied and Computational Mathematics. She currently works as an Associate Actuarial Analyst at Auto-Owners Insurance and notes how the programs in Mathematics helped her establish an analytical mindset. She has presented her actuarial findings to multiple members of her employer, from the Board of Executives to the Regional Vice President, amongst others.
