Biohazardous Waste

EHS is responsible for the collection and proper disposal of biohazardous waste generated in teaching and research laboratories across campus. 

For the purpose of this guideline, biohazardous waste and medical waste are considered synonymous and include any waste material with the presence or reasonably anticipated presence of blood or infectious materials or any waste material containing or contaminated with liquids of human or animal origin, but not including urine.
Proper biohazardous waste management practices are essential in protecting human health and the environment. EHS can assist generators in developing a waste management plan to address collection and disposal of biohazardous solids, liquids, pathological and sharps waste.

EHS Responsibilities:

• Provide guidance and training to generators to ensure the biological waste is being managed in a manner that is compliant with State and Federal regulations.
• Collect and transport biohazardous waste from generation sites to collection areas in compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.
• Arrange for the shipment of biohazardous waste generated on campus to a licensed disposal facility.
• Maintain records of all shipments of biohazardous waste.
• Maintain permits and licenses necessary for biohazardous waste management and transportation.
• Serve as liaison for regulatory agency staff during compliance inspections.
• Provide generators with a selection of waste containers and labels and manifests at no charge.
• Perform compliance audits of waste vendors to ensure adherence with University contract terms and conformance with State and Federal waste regulations.
