Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste is waste (solid, liquid, gas, or sludge) with properties that make it dangerous or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment. Hazardous waste can come in the form of commercial products, such as cleaning products, fertilizers, and pesticides. It is imperative that waste deemed hazardous is handled and disposed of correctly. Individuals are prohibited from disposing of these materials in a dumpster, compactor, or down a drain.
EHS is responsible for coordinating the accumulation, transportation, disposal and recycling of hazardous waste at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. It is the responsibility of each and every employee to ensure that hazardous waste is managed in a safe, responsible and environmentally sound manner. All hazardous waste operations MUST be coordinated through the EHS Department.
Contact the EHS Department with any questions concerning the identification, packaging, accumulation, handling, storage, labeling, transportation, training, etc. at 313-583-6679 or 313-583-6692.
For spill emergencies involving hazardous waste or materials, please refer to the UM-Dearborn Emergency Response Plan. Immediately report any activities or conditions that may violate these policies or guidelines to the University of Michigan-Dearborn Department of Public Safety at 313-593-5333 (if it is an emergency) or EHS at 313-583-6679 or 313-583-6692.
